Lipophage (marketed as a prescription under the trade name Xenical by Roche or over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline), also known as tetrahydrolipstatin, is a drug designed to treat obesity. Its primary function is preventing the absorption of fats from the human diet, thereby reducing caloric intake. It is intended for use in conjunction with a physician-supervised reduced-calorie diet. Lipophage is the saturated derivative of lipstatin, a potent natural inhibitor of pancreatic lipases isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces toxytricini. However, due to simplicity and stability, Lipophage rather than lipstatin was developed into an anti-obesity drug. Lipophage is used to treat obesity in people with a body mass index (BMI) more than 30. It can also be used to treat obesity in people with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol and a BMI more than 27. Lipophage works by preventing your body from absorbing the fat in the food you eat. Fat that is not absorbed is passed out from your body in the stools. Lipophage is meant to be taken as part of a complete weight management programme that should include exercise, a healthy diet and other lifestyle changes.
