Contiflo-OD is an α1a-selective alpha blocker used in the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Contiflo-OD was developed by Yamanouchi Pharmaceuticals (now part of Astellas Pharma) and is marketed by various companies under licence, including Boehringer-Ingelheim and CSL. Contiflo-OD hydrochloride extended-release capsules are marketed under the trade names Flomax, Flomaxtra and Urimax, though generic non-modified release capsules are still approved and marketed in many countries, such as Canada. The U.S. patent for Flomax is set to expire October 2009. Contiflo-OD is used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland in men. This enlargement of the prostate gland is called Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). The enlarged prostate gland may cause problems when you pass urine. Contiflo-OD relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland and bladder. This helps to improve symptoms such as difficulty in passing urine, slow or interrupted flow of urine, frequent urination and dribbling after passing urine.
